Snorkeling from Lembongan or a Bali Day Trip: Which Should You Choose?

Journal / Plan your trip · 6 minute read

Your starting point shapes the day: stay on Lembongan, or cross from Bali for a full-day outing.

Choosing between snorkeling from Bali or Lembongan starts with a simple question: where will you wake up on the day of your trip? If you are already staying on Nusa Lembongan, a local departure keeps the morning straightforward. If your holiday is based in Bali, an organised day trip brings the island crossing and activities into one plan.

Both options can take you snorkeling around the Nusa islands. The main differences are the transfers, the boat arrangement and how much of the day you spend travelling. Here is how to choose the trip that fits your stay.

Already on the island?

Start from Lembongan

Join the regular morning snorkeling tour, with no Bali ferry crossing that day. A practical choice for guests staying overnight.

Keeping your Bali base?

Choose a Bali day trip

Allow a full day for hotel transfers, return ferries and island activities. A separate partner team operates the snorkeling.

First, understand the islands

Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida are three separate islands southeast of mainland Bali. Indonesia Tourism’s Nusa islands guide is a useful introduction to their geography.

A Nusa Lembongan snorkeling tour can visit sites off neighbouring Nusa Penida. Our regular route plans to include Manta Bay, Crystal Bay and Mangrove reef, subject to conditions. The departure island and the location where you enter the water are not always the same.

Two separate journeys: Bali guests take the ferry to Lembongan before their partner-operated snorkeling trip. Guests already on Lembongan start on the island. Schematic map; routes and stops depend on conditions. Open the route map at full size.

Option 1: join the morning tour from Lembongan

If you are staying on the island, the regular departure avoids a ferry connection before snorkeling. The published plan is a 7:40 AM hotel pickup and an 8:00 AM boat departure. Pickup is included in Jungutbatu; send your hotel location to confirm arrangements elsewhere.

The tour is described as approximately 3.5 hours, with a planned hotel return around noon. That is the overall outing, including travel between spots and briefings, rather than 3.5 hours continuously in the water.

A sample Lembongan morning

  1. Before departure: be ready at the confirmed pickup or meeting point with your swimming things and towel.
  2. On the boat: listen to the briefing and check your equipment before entering the water.
  3. During the trip: visit the selected snorkeling stops. The crew may change the route for conditions.
  4. Around noon: planned return to your hotel, leaving the rest of the day available for your own plans.

This option is especially convenient if snorkeling is one part of a longer island stay. Keep later bookings flexible until the team confirms the expected return.

Option 2: take a snorkeling day trip from Bali

A Bali snorkeling day trip suits visitors who want an island outing while keeping their accommodation on the main island. Our related activity website, Lembongan Snorkel Co., describes the snorkeling day trip from Bali, including hotel transfers, return ferries, snorkeling, mangrove kayaking and Indonesian lunch.

This is a separate, partner-operated trip. The regular Lembongan boat has already departed at 8:00 AM. Day-trip guests follow the partner’s arrival instructions and go to the beach starting point, rather than joining that earlier departure.

A sample Bali day trip

  1. Around 7:00–7:45 AM: planned hotel pickup, depending on your location.
  2. 9:30 AM: planned Sanur ferry to Lembongan.
  3. On the island: partner-operated snorkeling, followed by mangrove kayaking and lunch.
  4. 4:00 PM: planned ferry back to Bali.
  5. Around 5:00 PM: onward hotel transfer from Sanur. This is not the time you arrive at your hotel.

These sample timings come from the day-trip listing checked on 5 November 2026. The listed transfer partner is D’Camel Fast Ferry. Use the date-specific instructions from reservations; a general ferry schedule does not confirm your package booking.

Return hotel transfers are included for Sanur, Kuta and Seminyak. Send your full hotel address for a quote from other areas. The published booking guidance asks for at least two days’ notice so the team can check availability and organise the day.

Itinerary comparison: from Lembongan, 7:40 AM pickup, 8 AM snorkeling departure and planned hotel return around noon. From Bali, morning transfers and ferry, partner snorkeling, kayaking and lunch, planned 4 PM return ferry and onward hotel transfer.
Compare the whole day. These sample itineraries include transfers and activities, not continuous time in the water. All times are Bali time; confirm your date-specific schedule. Open the itinerary comparison at full size.

Compare the whole day, not just the ticket price

The local snorkeling fare and the Bali day-trip fare cover different arrangements. If you are based in Bali, comparing only the snorkeling prices leaves out the cost and time of getting to Lembongan. If you are already on Lembongan, the Bali return transfers are unnecessary.

Ask how much time is planned at the snorkeling stops, as well as the total excursion length. Ferry crossings, road travel, briefings and kayaking are separate parts of the day. A longer package does not automatically mean more snorkeling time.

Your Bali hotel location also matters. Harbour check-in, traffic and boarding add to the journey, so leave room around onward travel or evening commitments. Share any fixed connection with reservations before booking.

Would an overnight stay suit you better?

Staying overnight moves the Bali crossing to a different day and makes the regular morning departure easier to plan. It also gives you time to enjoy Lembongan beyond a single organised excursion.

Our related business, Isla Indah Retreat, offers accommodation in Nusa Lembongan. Check the room options and availability for your dates, and compare the full cost of accommodation, ferry travel and activities with a day trip.

For a longer stay, you could arrive and settle in on day one, snorkel on another morning, and arrange surf lessons with Monkey Surfing, part of our related Monkey Activities business, on a separate day. Surf lesson times depend on tides and ocean conditions, so confirm them before fixing the order of your activities. This is an itinerary idea, not a combined package inclusion.

Does the starting point change the manta location?

The departure label alone does not tell you which manta site is included. Our regular tour plans to visit Manta Bay; Manta Point is available by private request, subject to confirmation and conditions. The Bali day-trip listing also names Manta Bay as its planned manta stop.

Read our Manta Bay vs Manta Point guide before requesting a particular location. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, and rough conditions can mean different snorkeling stops.

What to confirm before booking

  • Your starting island, exact hotel and preferred date.
  • The pickup point, ferry arrangements and expected return time.
  • Children’s ages, swimming confidence and any assistance your group needs.
  • The final total, including extra-area transfers and your payment method.
  • The cancellation terms and written confirmation of availability.

On the Manta booking page, payment is followed by availability confirmation from the team. Follow the stated confirmation process and keep the instructions sent for your trip.
